Safe At Work Mask Update 08.17.21

Stennis Space Center Updated Guidelines for Face Masks

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recently issued updated guidance on face masks and social distancing that factor in local pandemic conditions. Given local conditions in the surrounding Mississippi and Louisiana communities and in accordance with this updated guidance, Stennis Space Center guidelines have been updated.

Effective immediately (July 29, 2021), all employees, vaccinated or unvaccinated, must wear face masks and practice physical distancing in indoor common areas (such as lobby areas, hallways, stairwells, elevators, conference room/meeting areas, B-1100 Cafeteria, B-1100 Atrium, etc.).

When deciding whether to come on-site, please keep in mind the status of the federal government remains “open with maximum telework flexibilities to all current telework eligible employees.” Employees who are able to perform their work and conduct meetings virtually are encouraged to continue doing so.

Effective immediately, fully vaccinated federal employees, fully vaccinated onsite contractors, and fully vaccinated visitors to federal facilities are no longer required to wear face masks or physically distance on federal properties.

These changes are consistent with the new Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidanceExecutive Order 13991, and OMB memorandum M-21-15.

To clarify what this means for individuals:

  • If you are fully vaccinated AND at least two weeks past your final dose, you no longer are required to wear a face mask or physically distance at Stennis Space Center (SSC).
  • If you are not fully vaccinated AND at least two weeks past your final dose, continue to wear a mask and physically distance while at SSC.

We are relying on the honor and personal responsibility of employees and visitors as to their vaccination status.

These are the only changes to federal workplace COVID-19 safety guidance.  Workplace occupancy limits and telework for most NASA personnel remain in place.

Tenant agencies and companies may have their own guidance related to masks, physical distancing, and teleworking; therefore, employees are encouraged to consult with their supervisor and refer to their specific agency and/or company guidelines and policies.

The Stennis Safe at Work Protocol and other messaging will be updated to reflect these changes.

Due to improved local conditions and the safety and health practices instituted on-site, we have permission from NASA Headquarters to transition to Stage 2 of the NASA Framework for Return to On-Site Work, effective Monday, May 17, 2021.

All on-site employees and visitors are required to continue to follow the Safe-At-Work Protocol.  The Presidential Executive Order (EO) #13991 (Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing) is still in effect; therefore, masks are mandatory for ALL on-site employees and visitors, in addition to practicing social distancing.

Telework remains in effect for most NASA personnel. However, NASA employees who must be on-site to perform work may return to Stennis with supervisor approval ensuring that we maintain compliance with the 25% occupancy limitation pursuant to the EO. All other personnel should refer to their specific agency and/or company guidelines and policies.

Any new tenant mission-critical work request that has the potential to increase headcount must continue to be submitted for review and approval.  Requests may be sent to Arlen “Ken” Griffey.

Visitors should be limited to mission-critical only in accordance with your agency and/or company guidelines/policies. Please continue to monitor NASA People and SSC Emergency Management for the most current guidance on NASA’s response to the coronavirus and the center’s status.
